The World of True Charm

Above the circular auditorium of Bucharest’s Romanian Athenaeum (Ateneul Român), twenty gilded vase-shaped trophies encircle the drum, the cylindrical wall beneath its dome. Each carries a diagonal ribbon naming a pursuit of knowledge, art or practical life. This is where True Charm’s Overture begins.

As the Prelude puts it: “In the circle, relation does not require sameness.”

THE ATHENÆUM’S TWENTY PURSUITS

Twenty pursuits. One unfolding world.

Each of the twenty gilded trophies around the Athenæum’s drum names its own pursuit. Each deserves its own place here. At the Athenæum, theology stands beside biology, music beside mathematics, comedy beside tragedy. Each sees something. Each misses something. None sees the whole. The Overture unfolds in counterpoint. A prayer, a discovery, an old memory, an unexpected friendship: separate lives draw closer, until they must act together even when they do not see alike.                           THE READER’S OVERTURE

                          Many voices. One shared clock.

                          True Charm is written in counterpoint. One life carries the melody for a time, then another comes forward while other stories continue beneath the surface. A sacred realisation may give way to comedy because, elsewhere, the same Tuesday morning belongs to somebody being ridiculous. Its dated chapters follow a shared chronology, placing lives alongside one another before their connections become clear. The eight books make one unfolding narrative, not eight separate worlds that begin again with each cover. These World pages are optional companions: follow a question, discover another perspective, then return to the people at the heart of the novel.
